Kuakata, locally known as Sagar Kannya (Daughter of the Sea), is a place that beckons with its panoramic sea beach. Here’s what you need to know about this enchanting destination:
The Beach: Kuakata boasts an 18-kilometer (11-mile) long sandy expanse, stretching 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) wide. Imagine walking along this pristine shoreline, where the Bay of Bengal meets the horizon. From Kuakata’s beach, you can witness both sunrise and sunset in all their unobstructed glory. It’s like nature’s own canvas, painted twice a day.
The Origin: The name “Kuakata” has an interesting backstory. It originated from the Bengali word “kua,” which means “well.” Early Rakhine settlers (Burmese tribes) dug wells along the seashore to collect drinking water. These settlers arrived in Kuakata in the 18th century after being expelled from Arakan (Myanmar) by Burmese extremists. The tradition of well-digging continues in the neighborhoods of Rakhaine tribes.
Geography: Kuakata is situated in Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali District. It’s approximately 320 kilometers (200 miles) south of Dhaka, the capital, and about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the district headquarters.
Culture and Pilgrimage: Kuakata is not only a scenic wonder but also a place of pilgrimage for Hindu and Buddhist communities. During festivals like ‘Rush Purnima’ and ‘Maghi Purnima,’ devotees flock here to take holy baths in the bay and participate in traditional fairs. Don’t miss the 100-year-old Buddhist temple and the ancient wells located nearby.
Tourist Attractions:
Kuakata National Park: Explore the natural beauty of this coastal paradise.
Kuakata Ecopark: Immerse yourself in lush greenery.
Forest of Fatra: This protected mangrove forest on the western side of the beach is often called the ‘second Sundarbans.’
Well of Kuakata: Visit the ancient well near Rakhine village Keranipara.
Shima Buddhist Monastery: Marvel at the meditating Buddha image made of Ashta dhatu.
Rakhaine Settlement of Keranipara: Discover the village of Rakhine tribesmen.
Alipur Port: Explore one of the largest fishing centers in the southern region.
Mishripara Buddhist Monastery: Witness the largest Buddhist statue in the subcontinent, located about eight kilometers east of Kuakata beach.
So, whether you’re chasing sunrises, seeking spiritual
solace, or simply craving the salty breeze, Kuakata awaits with open arms. 🌅🌴✨
